Publishers Description: Providing rare insight into old spirituality, customs, and language, The Māori Oracle includes a set of 58 oracle cards honoring the New Zealand Maori tradition of seeking guidance and advice from our ancestors and loved ones who reside beyond the veil. It uses many of the teaching stories and portents that are still used by Māori from tribes all over New Zealand. Although the symbols are Māori, they are pathways for the language of spirit a language that is universal. This beautiful oracle deck and guidebook offers anyone, from any culture, an opportunity to reconnect to one's own heritage and ancestors. It has been created to act as a pathway for messages from the other side, providing a sense of divine guidance from one's own family and a strengthening in the knowledge that we are not alone. AUTHOR: PA Minnell was born and raised in New Zealand and lives with her husband and daughter. Proud to be of New Zealand Māori and European descent, she is an avid supporter of the recovery and the revival of ethnic spirituality.
Unboxing: The Māori Oracle set comes in a sturdy magnetic clasp box that houses an 80 page A5 book, with the 58 oracle cards tucked below. Cards are 127 x 90mm, glossy, and on good quality card stock.
The Book: The insightful book contains sections on Māori spirituality, Māori pronunciation, working with tūpuna, sample readings, and two Karakia along with 50 pages dedicated to the meanings of the cards.
The meanings assigned to the cards consist of a key phrase followed by the legend(s) from which the phrase is derived. For example:
Kōtarepopo (caw-tea-rare-paw-paw) The Kingfisher
Underestimation. The nature of a thing outside itself may not always reflect its truth.
The legends talk of the hunting style of the Kōtarepopo which sit, seemingly unconcerned, in plain view before suddenly striking.
The System: The 'oracle' system, employed together with the story based meanings assigned to the cards, offers a lot more depth than standard oracle style decks. Three cards are dealt to baskets (Te Kete Aronui, Te Kete Tūātea, Te Kete Tuauri) which are representative of the physical world (our needs and what affects us), what we know (what helps us stay on our path, what inspires us), what is concealed (possible futures, lost pasts, spiritual powers etc.). All of the cards/stories are interconnected but relate to different aspects of ourselves.
Final Thoughts: A beautiful deck and unique system that can give fascinating insights, whether used as an oracle or studied for cultural insight.
